Street lighting
In recent years, councils across Suffolk have moved to part-night lighting to cut costs and reduce light pollution.
Highway or road standard street lighting is the responsibility of Suffolk County Council or the Highways Agency, but the district and borough councils are responsible for some ‘footway standard’ lighting.
SWe are responsible for 1,735 footway standard lighting units in towns and parishes across the district. These are units that are 6 metres or below in height located in some residential areas, in public car parks, public gardens, alley ways linking residential streets and bus stops.
Footway standard lighting is where:
- the spacing between the lighting units is 48 metres or greater, or
- the lighting units are not in a system of street lighting which is 3 lights in 183 metres, or
- the lighting units are not on an adoptable highway, such as in a car park, alleyway or public gardens
'Part-night' lighting
With the introduction of part-night lighting in 2016, the majority of the council's lighting units will be switched off between the hours of midnight and 5.30am, with the exception of:
- lighting where sheltered accommodation for the elderly - to remain as all-night lighting
- alleyway linking residential street or at bus stop - to remain as all-night lighting
- car park lighting - to remain as all-night lighting
- bus stops - to remain as all-night lighting
The installation of an intelligent lighting system, is expected to save the council about £30,000 a year, due to reduced energy costs and reduce CO2 emissions. Other benefits include the ability to control and monitor the units remotely, providing greater energy efficiency and flexibility of operation.

Suffolk County Council has introduced an intelligent lighting system which provides computer-based communication with individual street lights allowing part-night operation, dimming, adjustment for actual light levels and for different days of the week or for events when lights need to stay on longer.
Introducing the system is saving at least £750,000 per year, across Suffolk, in energy costs and delivering significant CO2 reduction. For more information about street lighting and part-night lighting visit the Suffolk County Council website.
